Program Schedule

As space is limited, all accepted participants are required to attend the entire week and actively participate in all activities. 

Please plan your travel to arrive at the Wilmington College site of the Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive in time for check-in between noon and 2 p.m. on August 1. The program starts promptly at 2 p.m.

The program concludes at 2:30 p.m. on August 7, so please plan for your departure from Wilmington College for after that time.

Below is a preliminary program schedule.  A final, full program agenda will be available upon your arrival.


Daily Schedule

Each day of the Peacebuilding Peacelearning Intensive is designed to engage participants in a full cycle of learning that includes theory, practice, reflective and integrative experiences, and the direct application of learning into individual’s strategic peacebuilding project plans. 

Below is the general structure each day will follow. NOTE that on the first day, August 1, the program starts at 2 p.m. and on the last day, August 7, the program ends at 2:30 p.m. Otherwise:

7:00-8:00am    CONTEMPLATION (optional)

“Contemplation” sessions are designated for informal, participant led meditation, yoga, interfaith worship, experiencing nature, exchanging of different contemplative practices, and/or personal quiet time.

8:00-9:00am    Breakfast

9:00-11:00am  DISCOVERY 

“Discovery” sessions introduce important concepts and ideas and help form daily themes from which knowledge, skills, practices and practical applications will be explored. Discover sessions begin with presentations by experienced practitioners and scholars and are followed by small group discussions.  Discussions will introduce different dialogue and community building models that participants may potentially adopt and adapt for their own projects.

11:30-1:00pm  EXPERIENCE

“Experience” sessions are opportunities for skill building and for experiencing practical applications and approaches that bring the ideas and concepts introduced in the “Discover” sessions to life.

1:00-2:00pm    Lunch

2:30-4:00pm    INTEGRATION

“Integration” sessions take place in groups designed for moving from theory and practice toward integration.  Reflective practices, shared learning, and dialogue will aid participants toward distilling and integrating skills and knowledge learned daily into their own personal and professional lives. 

4:30-6:30pm    APPLICATION

“Application” sessions are working groups designed for participants to apply learning through the development of their strategic peacebuilding plans.

7:00-8:00pm    Dinner


Daily Themes


The following themes, introduced each morning, will be explored through each phase of the program, from “Discover” to “Apply.”  Each theme will inquire into the four spheres of peace that need to be nurtured toward the full development of the peacebuilder: the personal, the social, the political and the ecological.

Introduced by Betty Reardon - Founder, International Institute on Peace Education; recipient of the 2009 International Peace Bureau’s Sean MacBride Prize

August 4        Community and Cooperation:
                         What are the Political Dimensions of Peacebuilding?

Introduced by Janet Gerson - Education Director, International Institute on Peace Education

August 5        How are Ecology and Economy related to Peace?

Introduced by Patricia Mische, Co-Founder, Global Education Associates; former Lloyd Professor of Peace Studies & World Law, Antioch College 

August 6        Exploring Practical Experiences in Peacebuilding

Featuring a panel of peacebuilders from Ohio

August 7        Sharing and Commitment

Peer sharing of proposals, goals, and commitments for follow-up.


Special Events and Experiences


August 3        A visit with Wilmington College's Grow Food, Grow Hope Community Garden initiative 

The Grow Food, Grow Hope Community Garden Initiative is an ambitious and burgeoning new project dedicated to raising awareness of the benefits of local food production. Through community outreach and education, Grow Food, Grow Hope seeks to highlight the benefits of backyard and community gardening, and the importance of increasing awareness of our daily food habits.

 
August 6       Practical Experiences in Peacebuilding
                       “Celebrating Ohio Peace Building & Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Peace Resource Center”

This special “Discovery Session” will feature a panel of peacebuilders from Ohio who will share their practical experiences designing and developing local peacebuilding and community building projects.  The panel is also a celebration of the 35th anniversary of Wilmington College’s Peace Resource Center.  A tour of the Peace Resource Center and special lunch will follow. 


Other special events and experiences will be listed soon.   Information about Instructors ("Edu-learners") is available here.  Reading materials will be made available to participants accepted to the 2010 PPI.
