Elise Boulding Scholar-Practitioner

As part of NPA’s affiliation with S-CAR, we have established the position of Elise Boulding Scholar-Practitioner, a faculty position dedicated to the research and study of peacebuilding and current best practices in the field. The position is named for Elise Boulding, one of the founders of the field of Peace and Conflict Studies, and a founder of the National Peace Academy.

ArthurRomanoDr. Arthur RomanoDr. Arthur Romano of S-CAR is serving as the first Elise Boulding Scholar-Practitioner. Dr. Romano’s specific work in this capacity will support innovation, especially in adapting Restorative Justice practices in culturally responsive ways for more diverse schools and underserved populations that are most impacted by punitive discipline policy and systemic discrimination. Dr. Romano is currently working on setting up research on restorative justice approaches that examines attempts to use an explicit racial justice lens in public schools.

Romano is also working on assembling a national team of thought-leaders and practitioners that come from diverse backgrounds to develop a training institute and pedagogy lab for people of color on Restorative Justice.

During his Peacebuilder Teleconference Dialogue with NPA on December 7, 2015, Dr. Romano shared insights into how this new affiliation will enhance the merging of peacebuilding research and practice; what is working in the field of restorative justice, particularly in schools; nonviolence; and his role as scholar/practitioner.
